During an interview with Jeune Afrique, the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Musa Fakki Mahamat, stated that there was promising progress towards sustainable and lasting peace in eastern DRC, thanks to the Luanda and Nairobi peace initiatives until the Kinshasa regime threw the spanner in the works.
The AU chairman pointed out that although the Luanda and Nairobi peace roadmaps have all the ingredients for lasting peace in eastern DRC, the sudden change of the rules in the middle of the peace process to unilaterally declare the M23 Movement a “terrorist group” has thrown the peace process into confusion.
The chairman also mentioned that while the DRC continues to accuse its neighbor of supporting the M23, the UN Group of Experts has reported that the Congolese national army has continued to support armed groups, including the FDLR, which they have practically incorporated into the national army. For the AUC chairman, the Kinshasa regime is acting against the implementation of the peace process.
