Bernard Quintin, Deputy Director General of the powerful European External Action Service who is on a visit in Congo has said the European Union is in support of the efforts spearheaded by regional leaders to bring lasting peace to DRC.
Asked by the Kinshasa regime public relations agents masquerading as journalists why the EU has not condemned Rwanda and the M23 over what they call “aggression”, the EU official simply dismissed them and told them that the EU’s job was to mediate for peace, not to point fingers.
Bernard Quintin reiterated the significance of the Luanda peace process overseen by the Angolan President João Lourenço who was mandated by the African Union to bring peace to eastern DRC. He pointed out that the purpose of the agreement is to tackle the root causes of the conflict and put an end to the cycles of recurrent violence.
EU’s Quintin observed all elements of the Luanda and Nairobi peace initiatives have to be combined so that stakeholders can continue to progress in a technical way as well as a political way. The Luanda peace process recommends negotiations between the M23 Movement and the Kinshasa regime after the withdrawal.
The EU official called on all countries neighboring Congo to continue working towards the attainment of lasting peace in eastern DRC.
