Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye aka Gen. Neva is about to assume the chairmanship of the African Union, which is this February 2026. Unanimously, all observers believe it to be a comedy show loading. It would be really funny if the implications weren’t so grim.
Hailing from a terrorist militia, Ndayishimiye is at best a self appointed “General”, easily confused by his team of dubious advisors, and self-sourced theories on social media.
From the bush where he was a bandit, Gen. Neva literally purchased a law degree, to qualify as a presidential candidate. While titles (military and academic) are not always the best indicators for leadership, analysts insist on Ndayishimiye’s incapacities based on his track record.
Under his brutal rule, Burundi has regressed from the poorest country in the world to the even poorer. For five years, Ndayishimiye catastrophically failed to manage the economy leading to acute shortages of all basic goods in Burundi (Sugar, Ciment, pharmaceuticals, fuel, etc…) The country completely ran out of foreign currency making importation of basic goods almost impossible.
Diplomatically, Ndayishimiye is equally catastrophic whether regionally or internationally. “Ndayishimiye doesn’t understand anything in international relations, he wouldn’t know what to do about anything”, a critic noted, “In DR Congo, he started as a mediator and ended as a protagonist”. Yet perhaps most worryingly, is his inability to control his alcohol consumption.
Repeatedly, Ndayishimiye has appeared in public intoxicated. He generally launches into crazy theories such as prooving that Burundi is the source of water for the United States or even that Burundi is the biblical Eden Garden. Under the influence, Ndayishimiye aka Neva is also known to hurl insults. “His drinking is so bad that the first lady escorts him in almost all foreign trips. He fears her, she has a way of forcing him to stay relatively sober”, a source revealed.
Burundians are holding their breath and asking themselves, “Why? What a sick joke to make Ndayishimiye Chairman?” many are asking as they brace themselves for continental gaffes and embarrassment.
Even close friends and allies of Ndayishimiye think AU Chairmanship will end with tears for Neva. As for his critics, they too hope the embarrassment will be short lived.
The concensus is that Gen. Neva has bitten off more than he can chew.
