For some strange reasons, DR Congo’s Tshisekedi has managed to successfully distract the international community by inventing claims of invasion and aggression, which has allowed him to keep his belligerent motives under the radar. While he postures as a “victim of foreign aggression” pleading for peace, Tshisekedi continues to sidestep the peace efforts pioneered by the region and supported by the international community. As he pretends to be working with regional counterparts who are busy cracking their heads to find a sustainable solution for peace in eastern DRC, behind the scenes, Tshisekedi and his cronies are working to undermine their efforts.
The Kinshasa regime has continued to show no signs of letting go of its unholy alliance with the genocidal FDLR, which, according to the declarations of the Luanda and Nairobi processes, are supposed to be assembled, disarmed, and repatriated. Instead, Tshisekedi has included the genocidaires in the ranks of the new army recruits in Kitona, as instructors and fighters, and has publicly declared that the principal mission of the recruits is to fight Rwanda. Also, despite Rwanda’s show of political will at all levels in support of a peaceful solution for the conflict in eastern Congo, Tshisekedi and his lieutenants have continued to spread virulent anti-Rwanda propaganda in what they have called a “diplomatic offensive” against Rwanda.
The rhetoric aims at distracting the international community’s attention to an ongoing genocide and persecution of members of Kinyarwanda-speaking, Tutsi Congolese communities. Tshisekedi’s approach is to dramatize fantasies that they have concocted, with choreographed tantrums, all to falsely portray themselves as “victims of Rwandan aggression.” As the world is distracted, Tshisekedi continues to carry out actions that undermine the ongoing initiatives pioneered by the region to effect sustainable peace and security.
While the regional peace mechanisms have decreed the cessation of hostilities, Tshisekedi continues to order his army to attack positions of the M23, in blatant violation of the regional call for a ceasefire. The international community must shake off Tshisekedi’s hypnotic spell and save Congo from a full-blown genocide.
A genocide against the Congolese Tutsi is ongoing, and unless the world comes back to its senses, a tragedy of an unprecedented magnitude is underway.
